A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E Schwab

"For the ones who dream of stranger worlds"

The real question is why am I starting this series just now. What an amazing way to begin a series. A Darker Shade of Magic has to be one of the more fantastical and exciting stories I have read this year so far. It drove me into this incredulous world where everything seemed plausible. The characters are exceptional, the simplistic way of describing such a different and complex world was done perfectly, and the whole plot was adventurous and exciting. The book is really hard to put down and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.

ADSOM follows Kell, an Antari from Red London. Antari's are fellows that are able to travel between worlds hence travel between Londons. In this magical world Schwab built there are different versions of the same London. Red London, filled with magic and a monarchy that loves Kell as if they were his own and where Kell has a brother, Rhy. White London, which is filled with shadows and two monarchs that are terribly dangerous and spooky. Grey London, where our shadow thief Delilah lives a place without magic and almost no intervention of magic people except Kell. Lastly Black London who disappeared and got lost as magic went unbalanced destroying everyone and everything in the city. All the London's decided to close their doors to each other and try to rise on their own. However, the only London that was able to rise in riches and in magic was Red London while the others slowly perished.

The plot is rich with dialogue, with adventure, with amazing characters and great plot twists. Kell and Delilah made an amazing team as they try to stop a terrible magic that has unfolded and can control the whole world and possibly ruin it.

I loved Kell with everything and probably loved Lila even more. Kell is such a different hero than we usually see in stories like these. He is chosen in someway because of his ability to travel between the worlds, but in no way is he extremely powerful or smart or excels in anything spectacular. He isn't perfect and I loved that about him. The same goes with Lila, she's a thief a liar and yet her moral compass is so incredibly genuine that I loved her. The possible romance is there yet it isn't the focus or subplot of the story it comes and goes in two lines and two kisses shared and I hope it will continue in the next book because it is great.

I also loved Holland, I wish there was more of him we could learn. I didn't want him to die I want him to be saved so bad.

I cannot believe I waited so long to start this series and fall in love with this author who brilliantly creates a world I genuinely wish I could live in.

“He would see her again. He knew he would. Magic bent the world. Pulled it into shape. There were fixed points. Most of the time those points were places. But sometimes, rarely, they were people. For someone who never stood still, Lila still felt like a pin in Kell’s world. One he was sure to snag on.”
